44 - Barack Obama

Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Kapi'olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital (now Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children).  I visited in 2013:

At the time of his birth, his mother resided at the 6085 Kalaniana'ole Highway residence of her parents.  It is possible that she was staying in the bungalow behind the house.  They remained there for only two weeks.

Shortly after his birth, Obama's mother enrolled at the University of Seattle and the two moved into an apartment over a garage at 516 13th Avenue East in Seattle, Washington.  This building no longer exists.

Obama's mother returned to the University of Hawaii for the Spring 1963 semester.  They lived at 2277 Kamehameha Avenue, a building which no longer exists.

By 1964, Obama's mother had moved in with her parents in their home at 2234 University Avenue.

Obama's mother remarried in 1965.  The following year, her husband returned home to Jakarta, Indonesia and Obama and his mother followed in 1967.  The family initially lived in a new modest stucco and red tile house at 16 Kyai Haji Ramli Tengah Street in a newly built neighborhood in the Menteng Dalam village of the Tebet subdistrict in South Jakarta.  I have been unable to determine if this building still exists.

In 1970, the family moved into a home in the Menteng subdistrict of central Jakarta at Jalan Taman Amir Hamzah No.22.

Concerned about his education, Obama's mother sent him back to attend school in Honolulu in 1971.  Obama resides with his grandparents in apartment 1206 at 1617 South Beretania Street.  This is the first presidential childhood home that is a high-rise apartment building (and also the first time I took a selfie at a presidential site).  I visited in 2013:

Obama's mother divorced and returned to Honolulu to re-enroll at the University of Hawaii.  The two, along with Obama's new sister, moved into an apartment at 1839 Poki Street.

With his mother and sister returning to Indonesia in 1975, Obama stayed behind in Honolulu to complete high school.  He moved in with his grandparents, who lived in the same apartment building, but had moved to apartment 1008.  In 1979, he graduated and left for Occidental College in Pasadena, California.  His freshman year dorm was Haines Hall.

During his sophomore year, Obama resided at 253 East Glenarm Street in Pasadena, California.

Over the summer of 1981, Obama went to Indonesia to visit his family.  He returned in August to begin studies at Columbia University.  He moved into an Apartment 3E at 144 West 109th Street in Manhattan.  I visited the site in 2014:

Tired of suffering in an apartment with a "lack of heat," Obama moved at the end of the fall semester into Apartment 6A at 339 East 94th Street.  I visited this site in 2014:

After two years, in December 1983, Obama moved to a fourth floor apartment at 622 West 114th Street.  I visited in 2014:

In December 1984, Obama moved into his girlfriend's apartment in Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood.  He lived in the top floor apartment at 640 2nd Street until March of the following year.

From 1985 to 1988, Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago, Illinois.  I am unsure where he lived during this time.

Obama traveled through Europe and visited family in Africa in the summer of 1988.  That fall, he entered Harvard Law School.  While at Harvard, Obama rented a garden apartment in a rowhouse complex known as Langmaid Terrace at 365 Broadway in Somerville, Massachusetts.

In the summer of 1990, Obama worked at a law firm in Chicago.  It was during this time that he met his future wife.  In 1991, Obama graduated from Harvard Law School and returned to Chicago.  He married in 1992.  I am unsure of Obama's Chicago residences until the couple moved into the ground floor unit of a brick condominium at 5040 South East View Park in 1993.

Obama came to Washington DC in 2005 as a United States Senator from Illinois.  He rented a small one-bedroom apartment in a row house in Capitol Hill across the street from Stanton Park. In an interview with 60 minutes, President Obama joked that he was the only senator with a worse apartment than his staff.  Visit 227 6th Street NE.

The Obamas sold their Chicago condominium in 2005 and purchased a house at 5046 South Greenwood in the Hyde Park neighborhood.  This home continues to be Obama's official residence.

From the time he was elected to the presidency in November 2008 until taking office in January 2009, Obama lived at the Hay-Adams Hotel, located at 800 16th Street NW.

Barack Obama currently resides in the White House.
